Ever wonder how those guys and gals at Boeing know if their design for an aircraft is as safe as they hope it is? Finding this out comes by testing each individual component for stress, fatigue, and wear. Not only is this done for the small components, but also the larger parts as well. This clip comes from a great 5 hour documentary on the building of the Boeing 777, the first commercial airliner to be designed almost entirely by computers.
In this test, force is applied to the wing via pulleys, testing the pressure on the wing until…SNAP!
This is as close as I could find for the 787. It looks like the same method is being used, but they seem to be testing the regular movement of the wing vs the maximum stress capability of the wing. Still amazing to see how fluid that thing is!
I don’t know if it is still the case, but Boeing had a habit of hanging on to their factory workers for 30+ years. That sense of pride is earned, and I agree, its so nice to see. Love of one’s work goes a long way
