We have now reached the amount of votes as the year of the first 747 hull loss.

Lufthansa flight 540, a Boeing 747-100, crashed during takeoff from Nairobi International Airport, Kenya, killing 59 occupants; 98 survived the accident. This was the first fatal Boeing 747 accident.

Boeing 747 D-ABYB was taking off for the last leg of the Frankfurt (FRA) - Nairobi (NBO) - Johannesburg (JNB) flight when the crew felt vibration or buffeting following lift off. The captain, suspecting wheel imbalance, raised the gear. A lack of acceleration forced the crew to lower the nose in order to maintain airspeed. The Boeing continued to descend however and contacted the ground 1120 m past the end of runway 24 and struck an elevated road 114 m further on. The aircraft broke up and caught fire before coming to rest 454 m past the initial point of impact.

PROBABLE CAUSE: “The accident was caused by the crew initiating a take-off with the leading edge flaps retracted because the pneumatic system which operates them had not been switched on. This resulted in the aircraft becoming airborne in a partially stalled condition which the pilots did not identify in the short time available to them for recovery. Major contributory factors were the lack of warning of a critical condition of leading edge flap position and the failure of the crew to complete satisfactorily their checklist items.”

Should I make some 747 propaganda like I did with the 767 project? People really seemed to enjoy them.

We have now reached the amount of votes of the year the worst accident involving aircraft were to occur 48 years ago at Los Rodeos airport in Tenerife. 583 lives were lost that horrific day. And aviation would never be the same. R.I.P. to the victims of flight 1736 and flight 4805

The accident was caused by a number of factors. The first being the planes were diverted there due to a bomb exploding at Las Palmas where both were supposed to land. Once it was safe to go to Las Palmas the KLM captain was refueling and delayed both flights from taking off. Then once he was done he was in a rush. This led to him impatiently wanting to takeoff. He said “KLM 4805 we are now at takeoff.” The controller responded “OK sand by for takeoff I will call you.” But at the same time the Pan Am first officer said “We are still taxiing down the runway Clipper 1736.” So all the KLM captain heard was “OK.” He believing this was enough accelerated the throttles and the rest is history. Because of this tragic accident now pilots must hear proper words rather than just OK to be able to take off or land or maneuver. The phrase “Cleared for……” is now used worldwide because of what happened that cold March day
