Welcome to Winter 2019!

The second topic of the series is here! I am so excited to announce the winner is Madeira Airport.

To those who did not see the last season, you can go here. Without further ado, let’s get started on it.

Madeira Airport

Known as Madeira International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo.

Madeira Airport is located on an island in the Atlantic Ocean located 530 miles southwest of Portugal and 400 miles northwest of Morocco. Madeira Airport is the ninth most dangerous airport in the world. Madeira Airport’s IATA and ICAO are FNC and LPMA.

Madeira Airport is public and being operated by ANA Aeroportos de Portugal. Not to be confused with All Nippon Airways. It serves the island of Madeira.

On July 24, 1972, Madeira Airport opened for the very first time with two 5,249ft runways. The following year, the airport’s popularity increased to the point where they had to extend their runways to allow larger and more modern aircraft to land.

The name change occurred in 2016 when they announced to change the name from Madeira Airport to Madeira International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo to honor Madeira football player, Cristiano Ronaldo.

The airport is at 190 ft above mean sea level. It has one asphalt runway, 05/23. They only had one terminal with 16 boarding gates or 19 gates altogether.

Incidents and Accidents

There were three accidents at this airport. Two of them involved airplanes crashing into the sea while on approach. The other incident was an aircraft that had a rough landing after going around. The airplane landed and went on the bank and crashed on the beach.
