Why has Air Berlin gone bankrupt?
The last Berlin flight had been sold out for weeks according to rbb information. On board was also the new founder and longtime boss of Air Berlin, Joachim Hunold. He had reorganized the US company founded in 1978 in 1991 and directed until 2011. In these 20 years he made the airline the second largest airline in Germany.
But the fast growth became a problem. The fierce competition from low-cost airlines such as Ryanair or Easyjet ultimately led to years of losses and to several changes at the head of the company. On 15 August, Air Berlin had to file for bankruptcy. The air traffic was secured since then only by a federal loan over 150 million euros.
Before the last flight of an Air Berlin machine, Hunold made no secret of his disappointment. “It’s a deep sadness in me,” he said at Munich Airport. With his former company, “a life’s work comes to an end”. When asked if he had anything to blame, Hunold said, “Every manager makes mistakes.” Air Berlin had already accumulated high debts in the 20 years with Hunold.
