Hey there everyone!

Thanks for the service, Ben! I thoroughly enjoyed my visual approach into Hong Kong. Your vectors were great, but they could have been more efficient. One thing that I have learned is that approaches don’t exactly need to be pretty.

I used to give each visual a downwind, base, RAIS instruction, and clearance, but have since learned that all you need is a “point in the right direction.” As long as traffic permits, you can simply point the aircraft at the field at an acceptable altitude and have them report visual contact from there.

There isn’t really a need for setting an aircraft up when the pilot can do the work for you. As the controller, you are there to guide pilots, not fly their aircraft for them. This idea is similar to the Tower instructing a pilot to turn base unnecessarily.

Work to optimize every approach and you’ll be golden. You’re already doing very well so think of this as a further improvement on the foundation you have set for yourself. Let me know any time if you have questions.
