When should I begin descent? As soon as vnav is available, meaning in some cases 200nm away, or some time later?
Yes it also depends on how long the flight is
It let’s say you go to bed with 7,000 nm to go then you over sleep and you get a violation but if it’s a 1000nm flight and your next to the device then yes but if it’s a king overnight or flight you leave going while you go out to do errands then no
what distance from the airport is what I meant
It all depends on elevation and aircraft and location it’s entirely up to you
VNAV would be your best friend for that.
Hello!
In regards to VNAV, it’s best to only activate VNAV when you are active and at your device. I strongly recommend not activating VNAV as soon as you reach cruise because many things can happen throughout the day which may delay you in returning to your device on time in preparation for landing. This would result in your aircraft beginning descent when you are not actually at your device which could result in violations.
Best bet is to activate VNAV when you are about 1-2 minutes out from TOD and active at your device.
what is Top of descent and when will you be one minute out of it?
If you edit your status bar, you can select VNAV. It will show distance to TOD (top of descent) and how many minutes/hours you are out until TOD. Activate this once you are around 1-2 minutes from TOD.
Hey! Totally agree with @Declan point in regards to when arming VNAV. Another reason why VNAV is your friend over guessing when to decent etc… is because many airports have altitude restrictions at waypoints on arrival. When flying into busy airports with ATC active, controllers often times expect those procedures meet. All airports are different but it’s common practice to arm VNAV 1-2 minutes to TOD.
I usually start decent 120nm out manually with -2400 ft/min on small planes like A320/B737
