An Alaska Airlines’ “Friendship Flight” departed Nome and landed about 45 minutes later on the gravel runway in Provideniya, USSR — in the midst of Cold War tensions. This historic flight — made in the Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-200 (#740) now on display at the Alaska Aviation Museum — reunited long-separated Alaska and Russia Native peoples, and helped end the Cold War.
