Feature Request: Automatic Holding Patterns

With the FMS coming to Infinite Flight soon, I’d like to suggest adding automatic holding pattern functionality.

In real-world aviation, when ATC assigns a holding pattern, pilots can enter the instructions into the aircraft’s FMS, which then manages the holding pattern.

It would be great if Infinite Flight could support this in two ways:

1. HOLD Function in the FMS

The FMS could have a dedicated HOLD page/function where pilots can enter the instructions given by ATC, such as:

- Holding fix

- Inbound course

- Left/right turns

- Leg time or distance

The FMS could then calculate the appropriate entry (direct, parallel, or teardrop) and automatically fly the holding pattern.

2. Simple HOLD Button

For pilots who aren’t familiar with operating the FMS, there could also be a simple HOLD button outside of the FMS.

The pilot could select the fix and enter the basic ATC instructions, and Infinite Flight could automatically set up and fly the hold.

Having both options would provide realism for experienced users while keeping the feature accessible to newer pilots.

For example, ATC could instruct:

«“Hold east of ABC, inbound course 270°, right turns.”»

The pilot could either enter these instructions through the FMS or use the simpler HOLD function.

This would make ATC-assigned holding patterns much more realistic and accessible, especially for IFATC operations, instrument approaches, and busy airports.

I think this would be a great addition alongside the upcoming FMS.

It will be great. Today EWR was really busy and many a/c were holding. It wasn’t easy ahaha.

I was thinking about this the other day: how can a flight simulator not have a standard holding procedure?

Sometimes I find myself above the ideal altitude or need to gain some time before continuing the flight, and I would like to perform a holding pattern, but the simulator doesn’t currently offer this option manually unless ATC instructs you to enter a hold.

I was thinking it could be added to waypoints. If a flight plan passes through a specific waypoint, the pilot could select an “Enter Hold” option and configure a holding pattern at that point.

This could be useful in several situations: correcting an altitude, waiting for ATC clearance, performing a missed approach according to the published procedure, especially when the procedure includes a holding pattern, or simply when the pilot needs to spend a few extra minutes before continuing the flight.

It would be even better if the simulator allowed the pilot to configure the basic holding parameters, such as inbound course, turn direction, leg time or distance, and the number of circuits.

I think this would be a relatively simple feature, but it could add a lot of realism and flexibility to the simulator, especially for pilots who enjoy flying IFR and following published procedures.
