What you are talking about is the Metar. The ATIS is a clear word audio repeating itself, like in real world and on controlled airports here in IF. So the ATIS also gives clear runway directions for landing and departing.
Metar is indeed a bit cryptic, if you don’t know how to read it.

ATIS is this one:
“Portland airport, ATIS information OSCAR, time 2137 ZULU, Wind 340 at 9 gust 15 Visibility 8, Temperature 26, Dew Point 10, Altimeter 3007. Remarks, no intersection departures, no pattern work, no light aircraft accepted at this time. Landing Runways 28R and 28L, expect ILS approach, Departing Runways 28R and 28L. Notams, event in progress, check forum for event information and expect delays. Advise on initial contact, you have information OSCAR”
Like in real aviation it repeats itself endlessly, until updated.
The Metar Data is more complex and cryptic:
" TAF KPDX 031729Z 35008KT P6SM SKC FM032000 01010G20KT 6SM FU SKC FM040600 32005KT 6SM FU HZ SKC" and similar.
I also don’t know all shorts by heart and have to look them up.
VRB03KT means winds from VaRiaBle directions with 3 knots, or clouds are described as FEW, OR SCT for Scattered, or BKN for Broken…
Most important for me is always 29010KT, which is wind from 290 deg and 10 knots.
But here is about the clear words audio, which would be nice to have automated on uncontrolled airports, so there is some clear directions for all pilots to depart or approach, so that it should not happen (so often? 
) that two pilots want to land at the same time in opposite directions, or someone is taking off RWY07 while the other is on final RWY25
