ATC Training

Hey everyone!

I’m working toward becoming an ATC, and I’m currently grinding for more operations.

I’d really appreciate anyone who wants to stop by and help out!

Fly whatever you want — pattern work, departures, low passes, anything. I mainly need traffic and any feedback you’re willing to give on how I can improve.

Hey, there! Happy to hear you are looking to join the IFATC team. I will try my best to attend when you open!

Hi! I won’t be able to come but I want to recommend you applying for the mentorship program at the ATC Mentorship Hub. They’re a third-party group that helps people that aspire to be an IFATC controller to prepare for their admission tests.

Feel free to apply whenever you have 500 ATC operations and after you’ve applied as a recruit for IFATC. Here you can see the rest of the requirements and what they can offer.

They helped me to earn experience and confidence before passing flawlessly my local practical exam to become an IFATC apprentice. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: Very professional and dedicated team.

Alright, here’s your detailed feedback. You really need to learn and understand several key points before moving forward. First, you should have mentioned which runway you intended to use. Anyway, let’s move to the actual feedback:

  1. Transition Altitude :cross_mark:
The correct transition altitude was 4000 ft, but you assigned 5000 ft.
    Here’s how it’s calculated:
  • Airport elevation at LSZH: 1416 ft
  • Pattern altitude: 1500 ft
  • Transition layer: 1000 ft
    Add them: 1416 + 1500 + 1000 = 3916 ft → rounded to the nearest 500 ft = 4000 ft.
  1. Pattern Entry :white_check_mark:
Your pattern entry was very good. Well done on that part. :clap:t3:
  2. Touch and Go Request :cross_mark:
You didn’t properly check my request. I asked for touch and go, not a full stop. In such cases, you should clear me for the option with the correct traffic direction.
  3. Exit Runway :cross_mark:
You didn’t give me an exit runway instruction. It should be issued when the aircraft is around 70–80 knots.
  4. Taxi to Parking :cross_mark:
You cannot assign a gate on your own. The pilot must request a specific gate. Since I only requested parking, you should have instructed me to park at my discretion.

I genuinely want to see you in IFATC in the future, but you need proper training with experienced pilots. I also noticed aircraft taking off from opposite runways during your session. You should consider joining ATCMH as mentioned by @Ganso earlier for structured training. It will help you improve much faster.

Hey, it’s probably worth you having a bit more of a read around handling incoming/departing traffic in the manual.

But a few things to highlight:

  • For arrival aircraft, you need to give sequence to aircraft landing if there’s more than one aircraft landing when giving the pattern entry so people know who they’re meant to be following

  • When people are inbound ask for touch and go, after giving pattern entry you need to give “cleared for the option” and then right or left traffic initially (after the first touch and go the right/left element is not needed unless you want them to change)

  • You can give clearance to land earlier

  • No need for fly runway heading with altitude for those departing unless there’s conflicts with other aircraft in the airspace.

  • Can use the exit runway instruction and that tells aircraft to exit runway and contact ground

Plus points

  • Pattern entry correct on first approach (only missing sequence)

  • Did the right thing when you cleared me for take-off and gave me right right traffic

  • Did well to give the Turkish callsign a go around to runway 16 - it’s quite difficult in the training server as people ignore instructions. It’s always good to get in practice trying to use standard departure/arrival runways and avoid conflicts with aircraft landing/departing in opposite directions causing conflict (tip is to look at flightradar and see what’s in use as well as having a look at the winds in the METAR)

Keep working on it and reading up stuff in the manual!

Oh man, I was sweating through the whole session

I’m still pretty new to all this, so it was a really good learning experience!

Big thanks to @MPH258 and @Abu_Bakar for the feedback — I genuinely appreciate it. I’ve got a long way to go, and honestly, I’d rate my own performance as… well… pretty tragic :smiling_face_with_tear:

Thank you for your time (even if I was tragic, and I know it can be frustrating for you guys), and hopefully I’ll keep improving! I’ll definitely read more and look into the ATCMH as mentioned.

One thing’s for sure: my respect for IFATC is higher than ever!

The building blocks are there for you to be honest and I think you can do it; we all have to start from somewhere.

I’ve seen a lot lot worse on training server

Thank you for the takeoff and taxi clearance, you did a great job getting me off the ground in a smooth, record timing. I was the Air Canada 747.

Thanks for the pattern work!

Thanks for feedback.

I’ve noted some improvements I need to do.

There where some runway changes on going and I did not give the a pattern instruction first just cleared for the option. No sequencing was necessary.

So next time I know

RUNWAY CHANGE

  • Pattern Instructions
  • Sequence if required
  • Clearance with new pattern direction

I’m going to join you again. But this time I’m going to listen to your Tower frequency. I’ll be parked at a remote spot

You are doing quite well with all the traffic, traffic management is really good.

Hahah yeah I was wondering why that B747 was doing nothing😂 Man there was a lot of traffic… just suddenly

I really wish there was a option to say “Ground/Tower, [Aircraft Name] is Plane Spotting”
So you’d know what I was doing. Cause I was doing that while listening to your frequencies.
