Hello and welcome to the forum.

I’m sorry to hear that you got a violation. However, it sounds like that you do not understand the basic principles of ATC commands. Below you can find a diagram for what is meant by a downwind. Left downwind just means that you are turning left hand turns until you turn onto the final approach course. Number 3 just means that you are the third aircraft to land on that runway (13L) and the person who you are following is on “right downwind”.

For more information about ATC commands, you can find them here at the manual.

If you wish to appeal your violation, you can find the relevant information here.

Just to add to the excellent above response. Welcome to the forum. There may be instances where the aircraft you may be instructed to follow may be on the opposite side of the airport (not always directly in front of your aircraft), and may be on a different leg of the pattern in relation to your aircraft (base, or final).

Seperately, if you are not a member of IFATC, I don’t see why you should add IFATC as your Virtual Organisation

In all honesty, it can cause confusion and misrepresentation for a group you’re not a member of. If you’d like to join IFATC, please feel free to apply.
