I recently got grade 2 in IF and is finally in training server I am flying from London to Milan so the first thing I did was obviously request pushback from ground then taxi then ground sent me off to tower then I got my takeoff accepted, when airbone I got handed off to departure then I said “check in IFR”… and as I got further from the airport I turned out of London center. Considering this is my first time communicating with atc I was wondering if I did everything right? Is there anything I should’ve done different? Should I have said “check in IFR more then once to contact the active airspace I am in?
Hello, congratulations on getting grade 2! The training server ATC is able to anyone who is grade 2 so don’t be surprised if they do something that is very wrong. If you have any questions about your communications with ATC I’ve linked a helpful guide below. If you’re looking for a more realistic experience, I would recommend building up your skills and knowledge to get to the expert server. On ES, IFATC members control who have been trained and tested to ensure the highest quality of service. Hope to see you around!
Thanks A lot!
Based on what you told us you did everything right except you should’ve checked in (IFR) with center too. Please don’t ever check in to the same frequency more than once unless it’s been a good 5 minutes since your first message and ATC hasn’t replied. It’s unnecessary duplicate messages. ATC can see your altitude, etc. without you telling them.
Alright thanks to you too
In the guide in the descent and approach section it says you can contact ATC 50 nm at 18,000 feet usually when I’m at 50 nm from the airport I am way lower than 18,000 feet? Maybe 8,000 feet or less is that normal? Do you have tips to get 50 nm at 18,000 feet and not at like 5,000 feet?
I would suggest just tuning in as soon as you can. Whether it’s a bit before 50nm and above it won’t hurt anything. Also, that only for approach that you contact at 50nm. If only tower is online, then you can contact around 25nm any alt should be fine.
Okay thank you very much
