Some real world info: right now JFK is using 31L for departures and 31R for arrivals.

Something that baffles me:

Why would a airport build 4 runways that cross, only then to use 2 at a time?

  1. It’s useful to have crosswind runways
  2. If you have one crosswind runway and are forced to use only that runway, then it would severely limit ops. If you have 2, then landings and t/os can be more frequent
  3. Not sure if this is part of it but many approaches are over private houses so if they cycle through approach paths, then every affected area will be hit somewhat equally

But surely if you had 2 runways parallel (like LHR) you will always have a crosswind/headwind runway?
