Arrivals & Departures @KJFK | 1/25/2025

hello everybody!

introduction/yap session

as advertised, I was planning to go to JFK one day to do another spotting session today was a clear, sunny(ish day) here in New York City! knowing this, I just had to pack my stuff and start heading to Kennedy. this time, however, I’m using an actual camera with an actual lens, compared to my last topic where I used binoculars and my phone. PLEASE NOTE HOWEVER these photos are NOT edited in any way besides a bit of cropping here and there. I am also in the process of learning editing techniques, so stay tuned!

I had the pleasure of experimenting with different settings in Manual mode, as this was my first time spotting with an actual camera. it was a learning curve, but I hope that these photos please everyone! @Delta174J @Southwest_2115, and all other fellow New Yorkers are also free to pitch in haha!

spotting session information
today, winds were primarly west. this meant that JFK is using the 31s for arrivals and departures. because of this, I spotted at the Costco Parking Lot that is to the left of JFK’s 31R approaches. I also spotted at North Channel Bridge Fishing Area, which gives a beautiful view of JFK’s 31L takeoffs, which showcases a beautiful left turn bank.

gear
for my camera body, I use the Canon EOS M200, a mirrorless camera with an APS-C sensor. it has a touchscreen with no viewfinder unfortunately, but it does provide great images!

for my camera lens, I use the Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS-STM. I highly recommend this lens for any beginner/intermediate spotters as it gives sharp photos with fast AF (thanks @AndrewWu for the pointers).

time for photos!

Costco Parking Lot 31R Arrivals

this Singapore Airlines 777-300ER registered as 9V-SWL is arriving from Frankfurt.
fun fact: my grandmother flew on this exact plane to go to Frankfurt from JFK!

this EgyptAir 777-300ER registered as SU-GDN is arriving from Cairo.
is it just me or I think this is one of those easily recognizable liveries that are so simple?

this Air France A350-900 registered as F-HTYG is arriving from Paris.
this plane looks so clean with the Air France livery in my opinion, its beautiful.

this Delta A330-900 registered as N414DZ is arriving from Amsterdam.
this is actually the first time I’ve ever seen an A330-900 in Delta’s iconic colors.

this Turkish Airlines A330-300 registered as TC-LND is arriving from Istanbul.
I’ve heard that Istanbul is a beautiful and modern airport, unlike how JFK is.

North Channel Bridge Fishing Area 31L Departures

this Air India 777-300ER registered as VT-AEP is departing for Mumbai.
I was surprised that it took off only 14 minutes late. I also saw this plane before!

this Korean Air 747-8i registered as HL7642 is departing for Seoul.
I truly admire Korean Air’s dedication to keeping their bold and iconic livery alive.

this Asiana Airlines A350-900 registered as HL7771 is departing for Seoul.
notice the missing red arrow. this is due to the Korean Air x Asiana merger iirc.

this Uzbekistan Airways 787-8 registered as UK78706 is departing for Tashkent.
I personally love seeing this beautiful plane at JFK with it’s bright and bold livery.

this Japan Airlines A350-1000 registered as JA08WJ is departing for Tokyo.
I personally rode on one of these before earlier in August 2024. It’s a wonderful bird!

thats all folks!

thank you

if it’s not too much to ask, please give me some tips for future spotting trips! I am always welcoming some tips on how to improve my photography skill as a beginner with a camera.

Looks like I was correct.

Honestly for a first time there’s not a whole lot to say, overall stuff is a little bit low in frame but everyone (literally everyone) does that when they’re starting out. I would try to work out why your photos are uploading in 1280 and not 1920 like they should be on IFC. Are these exported for JP?

Awesome stuff for someone this new to the hobby!

thank you, and no I am not planning to upload my photos to JetPhotos until I have a little more experience. i just thought it looked nice to be honest lol

Ah understood. For this day and age I would probably just export full size. A lot of monitors and stuff are huge so 1280 on a not-JP site is pushing it a little bit.

But great stuff! Sharp, not backlit, not overedited. That’s all you could ask from a first-timer.

I couldn’t even blame you lol, it’s a beautiful livery that kinda reminds me of some retro liveries (in a good way).
