Inspired by the Jules Verne Book “Around the World in 80 Days” I thought whether it would be possible to fly the Cessna 172 from Seattle (SEA) to Auckland (AKL) it would take more than a day and would require many pit stops as the plane doesn’t fly farther than 700 nm. Could this be done?
Start in either the Canadian or American east coast, go to Greenland, Iceland, the UK, the rest of Europe, then through Asia, down through Australia and through to Auckland, that’s probably the best way to do it, with a few changes of course good luck!
You’ll need way more than 17 or you won’t make it. I’d recommend you do something similar to
KSEA-CYYC-CYWG-CYQT-CYGL-CYIK-CYVM-BGKK-BIKF-EGPE-EGSS-EDDF-(LOWW)-LYBE-LTFM-LTCJ-OKKK-OMDB-OPKC-VABB-VOCI-VCCB-VOPB-WIMM-WIEE-WIII-WADD-WATT-YPDN-YPMP-YBTL-YBBN-YLHI-YSNF-NZAA. So you’ll either have to change the plane or add airports to the route. But these airports are just suggestions, feel free to do however you want :) I chose airports that are mostly fairly sized, meet the range of the C172 and include your original routing.
Yeah so I have some unfortunate news 🥺,
Unfortunately I will have to cancel the event due to how hard the challenge is!
The Cessna 172 cannot fly over 2000ft with max fuel and so will frequently hit mountains and terrain and since I’m flying overnight I cannot necessarily fix it then. The next leg (CYYC-CYRT) I attempted to do 3 times with no success as I kept crashing in the mountains! So then unfortunately I will have to cancel the Event as a whole. I still want to go around the world so maybe I will do that in the Embraer 170 or 190 as a seperate event. But the Cessna 172 is just too hard of a plane to fly for weeks straight! At max fuel it goes slower than a car 🚘! Anyways just didn’t want to abandon the topic hence the explanation. Good Night Pilots!
