Are third officers still required on planes? (Such as the A320, 737NG)
You mean a flight engineer?
No.
I guess they are required on long hauls.
On 757 they do have addtl crew and crew rest area. Not many 757 do 8+hr flight though.
Flight Engineers, no. Third officers, really depends on the flight and what that would mean
They’re almost never required. However when British Airways bought in the a380’for a short period there was a flight engineer but that stopped almost a month after the plane coming into service
These days they will have 3-4 pilot crew on long haul flights, which will rotate around to give them rest.
Only on long hauls.
If the plane was built and is supposed to have a flight engineer, I’m pretty sure they still have them, but most modern planes don’t have a spot for them. Long haul flights normally have extra crew onboard so they can all rest, though.
