Approach Clearance

Instead of being vectored in for an ILS, if I commence my ILS approach at a IAF can ATC clear me at IF?

For example, in the case of ILS 24R at KLAX, can ATC tell me to proceed as filed blah blah, maintain 4000 until MERCE (IF) clear ILS approach 24R?

ATC are required to give you an intercept heading UNLESS a STAR or filed approach meet one of the following criteria:

  • contains a reasonable intercept angle to the final approach course or,
  • joins the extended final at a distance of 20nm or greater

In all cases though, an altitude below the glideslope should be issued with the clearance.

A 30 degrees intercept is need, if there is already a turn with 30 degrees in your STAR/Approach, so Yes or ATC will vectors you with a 30 degrees intercept (no need if you are 20nm away)

So ATC can’t clear me at a fix?

There is currently no way to do this, unfortunately. Maybe one day though!

Hopefully! I keep getting taken off the procedure when doing practice approaches even though I always start at the FAF 😭

Starting at the FAF? Sometimes, it can be quicker for controllers to take you off of your filed approach and give you vectors, but this shouldn’t always be the case.

Just for practice. I like vectors too but they kinda take the brain work away from me.

Oh, are you referring to an approach where the IAF is also the FAF and you have to fly the procedure turn? Those are fun, but sometimes a tad difficult to do under ATC control with what we have available to us. As I mentioned, things are always improving, so maybe one day!

Sorry I meant starting with the IAF. Whenever I type IAF my phone corrects it to either FAF or FAA 🤦‍♂️

Ha! That’s a fun one.

I totally look forward to this on the sim…hearing something like ‘N12345, you’re 3 miles from BUDDE, maintain 3000 until established, cleared ILS approach’.
