American Airlines 737-800 (1968) Las Vegas to Miami

Well, as anyone who’s read my comment history knows, I’m a fan of the airline industry’s past as much as its present and future. From the aircraft, to the liveries, to the routes, I’m deeply interested in how air travel used to be. One of the relatively few examples we have of this in Infinite Flight is the old American Airlines livery on the 737-800, a livery adorning almost all of American’s aircraft practically unchanged from 1968 to 2013, a stretch of 45 years, one yet to be matched by any other airline. Not coincidentally, it was also the American livery I grew up on.

Clear morning in the high desert as we wait to board our aircraft at Gate D5

Getting ourselves seated 2 rows in front of the exits

Leaving Las Vegas

Climbing out over the Mojave Desert east of town

Cruising near Las Cruces, New Mexico. Old Mexico is visible in the distance.

A bit of bumpy air over the Gulf is the first sign of trouble. According to the crew, we’ve got heavy weather up ahead of us, so it’s going to be a rough ride into Florida.

The clouds are looking a lot more forbidding as we descend over the Everglades into Miami

Wheels down at Wilcox Field, the original name of MIA

Taxiing into the D Gates. Saw the first flashes of lightning on the horizon, heralding a South Florida thunderstorm.

Deplaned at D43 as the first drops of rains start to fall as the storm approaches
