Dallas Love Field, my home airport, was the first major airport serving the amazing city of Dallas. It became a public airport in 1928 when the City of Dallas bought it from the US Army. It served as Dallas’ main airport until DFW opened in 1974. Since it’s humble beginnings as an air base, Love Field has grown substantially, handling over 16 million passengers in 2024. It is the birthplace, headquarters, and a major hub for Southwest Airlines, the largest domestic airline in the US. Southwest operates out of 18 of the 20 gates, with Delta operating one with service to Atlanta, and the other by Alaska with service to Seattle (although this is ending in May of 2025).
One of the coolest aspects of Dallas Love Field in relation to Southwest Airlines is the incredible work that went into succeeding as a smaller airport overshadowed by DFW. As soon as DFW became operational, American Airlines moved all of their services over from Love Field, and a new amendment was drafted called the Wright Amendment, which basically limited any flights out of Dallas, and thus with Southwest, to Texas, or any of the four surrounding states: Louisiana, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. Not only could Southwest not fly anywhere beyond that, they were also prohibited from selling through tickets directly. They worked around this, allowing smart customers to book separate tickets and thus layover at acceptable airports, but this severely limited Southwest’s growth as an airline. The amendment was finally lifted in 2005, with sanctions still limiting any growth in the North Texas region for Southwest. That is, until 2025. This is important, as it means Southwest can now begin to look at possibly servicing locations out of DFW Airport.
If you’ve made it this far, congratulations! I know this was a long read, but it’s pretty incredible what Southwest has managed to do. They are now the 4th largest airline according to fleet size, and supposedly the largest according to different routes flown, due to their point to point method and not hub like other major airlines. I grew up watching Southwest planes come in to land as their approach to Dallas went right over my house. I’ve flown mostly with them over the past several years, and hope to continue to fly with them in the future. Not only do they have amazing customer service, rewards opportunities, and baggage options, they also operate an ever-growing fleet of iconic B737’s, B738’s, and B38M’s, complete with many flashy and notable liveries.
Thus, as a tribute to both my home airport, as well as my favorite airline, for the success they have had through troubling times, as well a bright future ahead of them, I will undertake the challenge to fly every route offered commercially out of Love Field, including 75 different destinations!

A huge thank you to @Mason_Lennox for the inspiration for this, as he carries out his All Routes out of DFW next door. Also, let me know if you want to be pinged for flights. A lot of these are short haul, the longest is to Sea/Tac at a just under 4 hrs.
