Some background
In July, Alaska Airlines announced a new longest route (by block time), connecting the cities of Liberia, Costa Rica (really people fly there for the resorts on the Guanacaste Peninsula) and Seattle, Washington. The blocked time for this flight is 8 hours and 15 minutes, and will be operated by the airline’s fleet of MAX 9s on a seasonal basis. However, this flight is only the airline’s second longest based on distance, the longest being Anchorage - New York (JFK).
Pushing back from the gate with a full cabin and a full tank of Jet A1 for our long ride up to Seattle.
About to level off at FL320 over Lake Cocibolca, with it’s two volcano islands clearly visible. Fun fact: Lake Cocibolca is home to an endemic species of freshwater shark.
Not quite lol. Daniel Oduber Quirós was a Costa Rican president back in the 1970’s, and Daniel K. Inouye was former president pro tempore of the United States Senate. LIR is also called Guanacaste International Airport, Guanacaste being the province which it serves.
Even through the Gulf? Must be quite the geographical change in direction then…when I came down to Liberia from Los Angeles I flew almost exclusively over the Pacific Ocean! Might want to do it during the daytime then…
The route takes you up Central America, across the Yucatan Peninsula, over the Gulf of Mexico, then across Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.
