Aircraft not following flight plan

A few hours ago started a flight from EGLL-> ZSPD on a B777W, the takeoff and transition out of LHR was okay, the aircraft followed the filed flight plan, since when it was around 01h00am CAT, I thought I should sleep then I’ll check on the flight when I wake up.

To my surprise when I woke up my flight time was over 4hrs but the aircraft seemed to have circled
over one way point, the aircraft seemed to have a difficulty when it had to turn to the next way point, so it circled around that particular way point for over 2hrs, this is not the first time this has happened. I’ve had a similar incident in the past. This needs to be looked into, I even canceled that flight, it was an annoying experience to be honest.

This isn’t a “bug”. This happens if you have two waypoints two close together with too sharp a turn angle combined with how IF’s Autopilot works.

The solution for this is to go through your flight plan before your flight and delete any waypoints that are within 10-20nm of each other that require a significant turn. (More than 45 degrees or so)

This has happened to me many times before. When in long haul flights I typically make sure there are no sharp way point turns at cruising altitude to make sure that issue doesn’t happen again.

Annoying as it can be. Take it as a learning experience. What Ben said above is correct. I’m always going through my FPL before departure and looking for these. And even if the distance between the two looks ok and I am not sure, I still make a correction just in case.

Thank you everyone, I didn’t think that was the issue because there was 10nm distance between the way points, I’ll make sure that I check my flight plans before departure in the future

Maybe I have too much anxiety about it but I do it to be safe. Depending on how sharp the turn is, I’ll delete the waypoint if it’s less than 30nm. I observed a 777 once and in this particular circumstance, it took almost 20nm to make the turn.

And the thing is sim brief do give the close waypoint on some particular route ……
Made me to think that might be real life pilot would have to re check there fpl……😅

Same happened with me on the route OMAA-RKSI ( Dreamliner ) … when I woke up I saw my plane was circling over china due to close waypoints 😓
And fpl was made by simbrief .
