A little bit of history
Air Austral was established in October 1974 to serve the Scattered Islands and began commercial operations in March 1975 as Meeting Air Service. Very quickly, in August 1977, it began to serve Mayotte by operating a HS-748 with a capacity of 32 seats, a destination without competition that will support its rapid development.
Renamed Air Réunion in 1986, the company takes its current name in 1990 on the occasion of an investment in Air France.
In 1997, she opened direct flights to Harare, Zimbabwe, a destination she abandoned in 2000. In the same year, she acquired her first ATR-72.
Previously confined to the medium-haul in the South-West Indian Ocean, Air Austral finally began serving Paris Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle Airport on June 28, 2003 using two Boeing 777-200ERs. .
Air France estimates soon that the Reunion company competes on the line Paris - Reunion and seeks to divest of some 30.4% of its capital that it still holds.
In the middle of 2005, Jacques de Chateauvieux proposes to buy them through Bourbon Axa Investment Fund, a joint venture of Bourbon and Axa based in Mauritius. The General Council and the public authorities shareholders of Sematra are therefore worried about a possible change of strategy of the company to the detriment of the economy of Reunion. The proposal is rejected. Crédit Agricole’s subsidiary in Reunion became Air Austral’s shareholder in a three-year financial carry-over operation.
The cities of Lyon and Marseille are served twice a week from 1 November 2005.
Since March 27, 2007, Air Austral serves Toulouse at the rate of three flights per week via Marseille.
In 2008, Air Austral bought 49% of the shares of Catovair renamed at the same time “Air Mascareignes”.
On February 11, 2011, Air Austral connects Bordeaux and Nantes twice a week.
From April 2011, Air Austral will serve Asia as Cambodia, China, Vietnam, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Laos, Philippines, Indonesia, India, Malaysia … After a code share partnership signing with the company Thai Thai Airways International. Passengers traveling with Air Austral in Asia will have to make a stopover in Bangkok, to reach their final destination.
On January 15, 2009, Air Austral signs a memorandum of understanding for the purchase of two A380-800s from Airbus. These two aircraft will serve Paris from Reunion Island under the colors of a future subsidiary created by Air Austral which will probably be called “Outre Mer 380”.
The company inaugurates, in May 2009, a new line Paris - Sydney and Paris - Nouméa via Reunion and Sydney, by means of B777-200. To make a stopover by Reunion is simpler than to make a stopover in Tokyo: Réunion being a French department, it simplifies the formalities to go to Nouméa.
In May 2009, Air Austral received two Boeing 777-300ERs from Boeing via ILFC and immediately purchased two ATR 72-500s. The first replaces the ATR already existing in the fleet, while the other ATR 72-500 strengthens the regional fleet of the company.
On November 17, 2009, at the Dubai Air Show, Air Austral confirmed its order for two A380-800s.
On December 11, 2009, Air Austral will order 2 Boeing 737-800s from Boeing for delivery in December 2010. The two Boeing 737-800s will replace the two 737-300s and 500s of the company.
Mid 2011 early 2012, Air Austral will receive 2 Boeing 777-200LR ordered at the Farnborough Air Show in 2010. They will be set up on the first line directly linking Mayotte to the Metropole, Paris-Mayotte
