Hoping this is the right place. I’m looking for some advice here.
Sometimes, STARs include the destination within it, or sometimes they have random waypoints we don’t want to use BEFORE going onto the approach part of the plan.
For example at CYOW on the CAPTL5 STAR, it ends at the airport before going to the approach.
The issue I’m having is that by removing the waypoint, the STAR is technically removed from the fpl(as below)
This now means I cannot use the “Decent via” function with ATC & I had a controller recently assuming I hadn’t set the expected STAR in the ATIS when I actually had done & got very grumpy with me.
I can’t see that we manually skip the waypoint when we get to it, because this would surely effect VNAV, thinking it has longer to the approach point.
Any suggestions or advice from pilots and/or ATC perspective is much appreciated.

Include the whole STAR at first and once you’ve requested your descent and it’s been approved, remove the unwanted fix.

My advice would be generating FPL with SimBrief first, then if you have the chart, use altitudes from the chart; if not, compare SimBrief-generated STAR with IF built-in STAR, then copy the altitudes from IF’s STAR to SimBrief’s.

I went into Simbrief, with the AIRAC set to 2412 to match IF’s last update that I’m aware of, and the generated waypoints do actually run through DUKTI then CYOW.
Of course, like most flight planning tools, the approach is never included except for indicating the landing runway for STAR purposes.
I can’t think of any other advice at this point except the first suggestion: when planning, add the STAR, add the approach. Once established with ATC, delete the “CYOW” fix and fly the remaining waypoints as cleared.
Or leave the CYOW fix in there, and use ACT LEG to proceed from VOLAG (the IAF indicated on the RVAV 32 Z plate) direct to TEXEN.
Either would give you the intended path overall, and neither is more or less expensive in terms of UI clicks.

Many thanks for looking into it a bit more. Good info to know
The suggestions will definitely work. I’ll start doing this
