Loading up a team of 62 biologists who are headed on the first leg of their journey into the depths of the Guinean highlands to conduct a series of surveys on the local flora and fauna

Blasting out of Port Moresby, the capital of the nation of Papua New Guinea. PNG shares the island of Guinea roughly in half with Indonesia

Up at 30,000 feet, cruising along the southwestern coast of PNG. The island, which is the second largest on Earth, is home to an incredible 302 known individual tribes, who inhabit everywhere from the tropical coastal regions to the lofty mountain peaks. The 302 number is an estimate - there are most certainly more uncontacted peoples in the most remote corners of New Guinea. There’s a combined 800+ documented languages spoken on the island, making is one of the most linguistically diverse places in the world.

Passing over Lake Kutubu, in the center of Papua New Guinea. The lake sits in the Southern Highlands Province, which is at the foothills of some of the largest mountains in PNG.

Flying over towering mountaintops as we cross into the Indonesian side of the island.

Banking southwest as we make our approach into Wamena over the dense, virtually totally un inhabited rolling forests that cover much of New Guinea. The island is home to an astounding level of diversity in its nature. You can find everything from wallabies and macaques to the stunning bird-of-paradise. There’s also a lot that can kill you lurking in these jungles - there’s over 80 species of poisonous snakes, including the feared Taipan, which kills over 1,000 PNG residents annually

The approach into Wamena is reminiscent of Paro. You must navigate through a series of tight, winding valleys before making a sharp turn to line up with the runway, which is at about 5,000 feet in elevation

Battling a gusty crosswind as we make our final approach over the Bailem River

One firm touchdown later and we’re safely on the ground in the largest city on the Indonesian side’s highlands

Getting everything unloaded before making the return trip to Port Moresby empty

Thank you! I definitely recommend flying in this region. There’s a lot of fun airfield with tough approaches in the mountains to check out in the C208.
