Accurate/Improved Map

With the launch of Global, FDS introduced a new map. It’s the map where we can select our departure airport and where we create and see our flight plan.

This new map/globe isn’t very accurate though. There are airports which are displayed to be on water, smaler islands aren’t even there and the whole thing in general is very basic.

I think it’s important to have a more accurate map in game. It helps with planning the flight; and it simply looks better.

My suggestion is a map with the following features:

  • Accurate coast borders
  • Accurate display of islands
  • Country borders

Or short: A realistic globe.

Additional:

  • More layers (satellite imagery or blank map, approach and departure airspaces, …)

The best way to implement those is by simply show a map with real satellite imagery. Here is an example of how another game solved it:

IF used to have a similar map before Global. I’d love to see something like that coming back. It would make this simulator more realistic and it would improve the flight planning a lot.

The previous map we had in the sim pre-global was removed for various reasons. For airports that are displayed on water, they are on the coast. Smaller islands sometimes aren’t there because there is no airport on the island.

Guys, some of you are misinterpreting what he’s requesting.
This might be considered similar to what we had pre-Global, yes.

But as i understand it, this is even more detailed. Satellite imagery says it all imo.

I understand what he is saying, and I think it is a great idea. I was just providing an explanation to his second paragraph.

Although it would interesting if this is implemented, how would we know the altitude of various mountains (not by dragging to vector).

This is greatly needed. As the globe has already been made and the airports have been geographically mapped out with the scenery, a satellite imagery overlay of the map should be quite simple to implement. I’m definitely voting for this one. :)

Thanks for your vote! The satellite imagery does already exist on the terrain. I think it should be possible to put it on the globe as well.

This would be great, because other than looking at local airports, and visualy if it’s higher or lower than you, you have no way to know altitude as a pilot…

I think a great way they could do this is by making it a simplified version of the FAA sectionals. Obviously this would work in the US but I don’t know if other countries have similar systems.

I’d love to have this, but I’d hope for having the ability to toggle it on/off as well (just in case I don’t want the pretty satellite imagery).

I’m gonna push this if I may. A better map in IF would definitely improve Navigation and give us a better overview.

I definitely agree with you! I think an accurate map with borders and maybe even terrain levels would be a huge addition to the sim.

I like to plan my routes realistically, such as Qatar aircraft avoiding certain airspace’s and this would massively help!

Well, let’s be honest here, it just looks cooler as for any flight. It is also helpful to see any upcoming mountain areas nearby.

How about a more detailed map with “show terrain” like how it was prior to global? Obviously way more detailed (island, country borders, etc.) but just terrain with color, as satellite imagery might be too distracting to see all the waypoints/airports.

I live for this idea though and you have my vote for it! <3

Exactly. The terrain feature in the was great especially during approaches in mountainous areas.
