I have just completed my flight from HANEDA to SEATTLE
My landing was decent but I was trying to use all the feedback from other threads but when I disengaged AutoPilot I started drifting off to the side. I wasn’t moving my device at all. Also my landing was quite hard, any tips of making it smoother in crosswind?
My number 1 tip is just use APPR :D
If it isn’t available, just try your best to follow the vector things or just look at the minimap while on HUD mode.
@ButterPilot24.7 when you were landing, you had a 4 knot crosswind coming from your 1 o’clock. Normally, landings below 10 knots of wind, especially in heavies, do not need to require additional rudder movements or direction changes in the nose. Coming straight in will do just fine as the winds don’t affect you.
Now, for some reason, APPR made you come in at a certain angle. However, it managed to stay aligned with the runway as it was coming in at a speed of 142 IAS.
However, when you took over, you sped up to 148 IAS, without changing the direction of the nose. This means the wind could no longer counteract your speed so you simply flew in the direction your nose was pointing. This got you misaligned from the centerline.
Try to keep your speed consistent once disabling APPR.
Keep making small adjustments instead of keeping your device still. Moving a bit off the localizer is no issue but you went too far off on this one.
Disable APPR earlier, and straighten the nose. You disabled it very late so you couldn’t get used to the handling of the aircraft in the conditions. APPR can do weird things at weird times (like changing direction of nose in unnecessary conditions) - your job as the pilot is to spot these and correct them before final approach.
