Hey IFC, I’m currently flying from Paris LFPG to Abidjan DIAP in an Air France Airbus A350-900, callsign is Air France 702 and ETE is 58 minutes. The ATC schedule for today shows that this airport will be staffed, does anybody know when this will be available? I was hoping for ATC upon arrival, thinking it would be staffed by now as the switchover time is 0600Z. Please let me know if it is known if anyone will be staffing this airport by the time I arrive, thanks. :)
If any of the controllers from IFATC wants to open this airport they will when their available. This airport does have a few arrivals into it, so there’s a strong possibility it will be open soon. Controlling for IFATC is voluntary, so ATC coverage isn’t always guaranteed.
Thanks so much for letting me know. There is a few arrivals, so hopefully it will be staffed by the time I arrive.
The thing is IFATC like to open up and most pilots like to go where its busy - Abidjan only has 7 arrivals - whereas Nairobi - the main hub for today - currently has 174 arrivals.
You might get IFATC…but I wouldn’t count on it - as the majority of them are sleeping…
We have a good majority of controllers that are actively controlling from Australia, Asia and Europe! It doesn’t always go by what timezones people are in. They might have something more pressing to do in their life than controlling right now. I’ve seen people from Europe controlling at 3 or 4 in the morning their times!
Exactly, in Australia where I’m from it’s still evening here and even earlier in other states. So there is a good chance we’ll have some of the them controlling the IF airspace at the moment. It’s very diverse I’m sure other continents like Asia will have controllers volunteering at the moment or even later as it is evening there as well.
DIAP is currently open!
Thanks @BennyBoy_Alpha I’ve landed at Abidjan and I’m happy to say ATC ended up staffing the airport at that time. :)
