A380-800 descent speed management

I was on an 11 hour flight from ICN to KLAX and when I was in my approach I had to disarm Vnav because when the Vnav made the aircraft descent my speed went up drastically even if I had a set speed on my AP and when I disarmed VNAV and manually flew a Vertical speed my speed stabilized? Can someone explain to me why this is on the a380-800 and not other planes?

Hello,
The issue you encountered with VNAV on the A380-800 is likely due to the aircraft’s descent rate. Heavier planes like the A380 can experience significant speed increases during descent if VNAV descends too quickly. Unlike lighter planes, which are easier to slow down, the A380 requires more careful management.

To manage this, consider slowing down farther from your destination and make use of the necessary flaps and spoilers. This will help you control your speed more effectively during the descent and approach phases.

To add on to what @Mattchew said, the common approach for passenger flights from Asia (IRNMN2 arrival) has quite a high altitude difference in a short distance (FL290 - FL230 within a 3-5 minute or less flight time) which can make VNAV descend at a higher V-speed to accommodate the differences. You can slow down faster/earlier or delete some of the waypoints or altitudes as it’s a mostly straight arrival until you turn at around Malibu.

Thanks for your help.

The a380 is a bit slippery and tends to gain speed on descent. If you slow down or descend earlier to reduce your vs that should keep your speed in control.
