A330-800neo — Excessive LNAV Turns / Difficulty Following Flight Plan
Flight
OKKK → LSGG
Aircraft
Airbus A330-800neo
Description
I experienced an issue with the A330-800neo’s LNAV/autopilot while following my flight plan.
The aircraft makes very aggressive and unnecessary turns when reaching waypoints, even when there is little or no change in heading between the current and next flight-plan legs.
For example, I was flying approximately heading 330° toward a waypoint USR1. The next waypoint after USR1 was also on approximately heading 330°, meaning the aircraft should have continued essentially straight ahead.
However, when the aircraft reached USR1 and the next waypoint became active, the aircraft suddenly banked left and then right, despite there being no significant change in the required flight path. It appeared to be turning without any apparent reason or target, before attempting to return to the flight-plan track.
This behavior can also happen when there is only a very small heading change. Instead of making a smooth correction, the aircraft can make a sharp bank and then overcorrect in the opposite direction.
The issue makes the A330-800neo struggle to consistently follow the flight plan and requires manual intervention to prevent the aircraft from deviating significantly from the route.
Expected behavior
When two consecutive flight-plan legs have the same or nearly the same track, the aircraft should continue smoothly along the route without making an unnecessary turn.
If a small correction is required, LNAV should make a small and smooth bank to recapture the flight path.
Thank you for looking into this issue.
