From Egypt we head Back to Central America where we find our next country El Salvador. Only having an area of 8,124 sq mi, El Salvador is known as the “Tom Thumb of the Americas”. Yet with this size El Salvador is the most densely populated country in Central America with a population over 6.3 million people. El Salvador translates to “The Savior” in Spanish and is home to numerous Volcanos including Cerro El Pital which is located nearly 9,000ft above sea level! The countries biggest city and capital San Salvador is located in the mountains making the country’s main airport where we are flying into today to be located in the lower planes of the country nearby to the sea.

Leg 53 — 🇬🇶 Equatorial Guinea / Malabo 🇬🇶

We now are heading back to Africa but strangely enough, we are also heading to another Spanish speaking country. Equatorial Guinea is located on the Gulf of Guinea and is the only Spanish speaking country other than Spain that is not located in the Americas. Despite the name, Equatorial Guinea is located entirely in the northern hemisphere with none of its land touching the equator in any way. The country has a small area of being nearly 28,000km yet it’s the third largest oil producing country in Africa. This oil is mainly located near the Island of Bioko which is also home to the country’s capital and largest city Malabo. Malabo is located completely offshore of the mainland which houses the second biggest city Bata.

Leg 54 — Eritrea / Asmara

It has been a bit but we are so back and this time we’re heading across to the horn of Africa to find Eritrea. The country has a mountainous landscape paired with cliffs that run down towards the desert boarder with the Red Sea. Eritrea is one of the only countries in all of Africa that was colonized by Italy and so much of the buildings and architecture in its citys are Italian architecture. Because of this Christianity is the dominant religion in the country, however, the most common language is still the indigenous Tigrinya which is also spoken in Ethiopia. The Countries capital Asmara found over 7,000 ft above sea level (making the capital the 6th highest capital city in the world) is the biggest city in the country and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Leg 55 — Estonia / Tallinn

Heading up north to the Baltics we find our next country Estonia. Known for having some of the best public education and cleanest air in Europe, Estonia is highly developed and considered on of the corrupt countries in the world. The country is surrounded by water including the Baltic Sea, Soome Iaht, and the Gulf of Riga. However, the country itself is primarily forest and ironically the landscape can also host stoney beaches across its coasts. While there are only around 1.4 million citizens in Estonia, there are over 220 ethnic groups making Estonia quite the culturally diverse country. The capital Tallinn is the largest city in Estonia and is home to nearly a third of the countries population.

Leg 56 — Eswatini/Manzini

Our next country takes us down to Southern Africa where squished between South Africa and Mozambique we find the Kingdom of Eswatini. Formerly known as Swaziland up until 2018, Eswatini, while small, holds a plethora of landscapes including mountains, savannas, and lush grasslands. The country is a constitutional monarchy with King Mswati III being the current ruler. The country is one of the lushes in Africa with hundreds of different rivers flowing through the country all leading towards the Indian Ocean located only 100km away from the landlocked country. The country is also one of the youngest on earth with a third of the population being between the ages of 15 and 29. The country has two capitals being Lobamba and the largest city Mbabane with a population of just above 76,000 people. However, the only international airport in the country is located in the Lumbo Region, miles away from any major cities.

Leg 57 — Ethiopia/Addis Ababa

With the final country in the E’s we are heading to the location where it’s believed humans originated from, Ethiopia. Landlocked within the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia is known for its diverse array of environments from the mountains of the Ethiopian Highlands, to the low dry planes located in southern region of the country. Ethiopia lies right on the Somali plate and the Nubian plate creating multiple tectonic anomalies including hot springs and Dallol with its unearthly yellow landscape. With such dry landscapes, Ethiopia is also home to lush Savannahs riddled with wildlife and a diverse array of plants including the coffee plant which created the first ever cups of coffee. With such a long heritage Ethiopia is home to a diverse culture made up of its 135 million citizen’s which makes Ethiopia the second most populated country in Africa. Ethiopia has seen economic growth in the past decade and no where is this growth apparent then in Addis Ababa the countries capital which today is home to the headquarters of the African Union,

Leg 58 — Fiji/Suva

Starting off our short list of F’s we head to the South Pacific Ocean to the island nation of Fiji. Fiji is an archipelago made up of over 300 islands with 90% of the country’s territory being ocean. Fiji is home to multiple coral reefs giving the country the title of being the soft coral capital of the world. Along with pristine marine life, Fiji is home to lush rainforests, white sand beaches, and a temperate tropical climate making the island a hotspot for tourist from Asia, Australia, to the Americas, however most people across the world may know Fiji for it’s biggest export which is in-fact Fiji Water. While the nation has a huge native population, around 40% of Fiji’s citizens are of Indian decent due to the Nation’s colonial background with Britain. While the island nation has over 25 airports, only 4 are paved and of those 4 only one can accommodate big commercial jets which is Nadi International Airport located on the western coast of Fiji’s main island. Yet the capital and most populated city of Fiji is located on the Main island’s east coast in the city of Suva.
