A very windy departure

While Hurricane Helene πŸŒ€ is headed its way over the Gulf of Mexico to the panhandle region of Florida 🏝️🐊🍊 and eventually into Georgia, Tennessee and Kentucky. And while the Miami 🏝️😎 area isn’t under a big threat it isn’t all sunshine and rainbows either, it’s pretty windy so and in fact that schools were closed down. And to take advantage of the day off, I flew from Miami 🏝️😎 to BogotΓ‘, Colombia πŸ‡¨πŸ‡΄ and took off from Runway 8R which had a very strong crosswind of 26kts or gusting 31 or so.

Yeah, have fun flying in this weather πŸ’€

I’m at KPIE, holding at a standstill for takeoff. Check out my airspeed:

Yikes, imagine if it became a tailwind

Yeah, also maybe try a C172 for an interesting takeoff!

edit: I just tried the C172. First time the wind flipped me upside down before I could face the wind.

The second time I took off with a ground speed of about 10kts! Felt like a helicopter.

update: With heavy turbulence I made it back to the runway. I thought I was losing control on final but actually it landed gently at a ground speed of 4 kts!

It’s obviously very unfortunate the impact this severe storm is having on people living in its path.
