A Very Big Surprise (literally) | Munich & Unterschleißheim, March 12, 2021

Hello again!

Less than a week after my last topic, here comes more new stuff from Munich. For a very special guest, lots of spotters gathered in Munich yesterday morning. After calculating takeoff distances and receiving 5 different departure times within a few hours the evening before, everyone was rather nervous but in the end, due to a delay until early afternoon we had to kill quite some hours after arriving at the airport at 9 am. Before leaving the airport again, we quickly got a shot of one of TUI’s logojets, this time promoting photo books (even though I usually order at another printing service lol)

Since me and a friend couldn’t be bothered to wait for the departure for 3 hours at an empty airport with questionable weather, we decided to try out another spotting opportunity at the German Federal Police’s Heliport in Unterschleißheim (have fun pronouncing this, non-german speakers) where traffic was not really a thing either but we at least managed to get a few shots of an Airbus A155 returning from eastern Bavaria.

Upon our return to the airport, we at first encountered a little sleet shower before the special of the day finally departed. A day before, a US Air Force C-5M Super Galaxy had surprisingly diverted to Munich due to high winds at Ramstein Air Base. This was the first time since 2003 that a C5 visited Munich. After buying some cases of Bavarian beer, the crew set off to San Diego yesterday which they performed as a non stop flight with some aerial refueling on the way to make it to the US west coast. In this taxi shot, mind the guy on top of the plane overlooking the planes surrounding.

Unfortunately, light was on both sides of the runway but not on the runway itself which required quite some work in Photoshop to get a somewhat decent shot of it during takeoff roll.

Thanks to the “great” timing of the sun, the only shot with sun on the plane we got was this shot during climbout.

After a quick lunch break at the local butcher, we went to the spotter hill for two more arrivals, including this Lufthansa A320neo from Frankfurt wearing the new A320neo mask.

The last movement we spotted, and we luckily caught with sun on it, was the departure of Etihad’s F1 livery (@anon2996007) that happened with sun on the runway but rain on us on the spotter hill. Reason enough to quickly leave the place again after that, especially since nothing special was scheduled for the remainder of the afternoon after all.

Thanks for visiting this topic! I hope you liked it! See you for the next topic, whenever it might be ;)

My Equipment:

Canon EOS 80D
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS II USM (99% of pics)
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS II USM (for wide angle pics)

Backup / Old Lenses

Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (for the 1% of the cases where I needed a wide angle lens, replaced by the 24-105 now)
Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS STM (for the majority of my very old pics, bascially completely replaced by the 100-400 now)

Sorry but no lol, make that “schlee” a “shleyes”

Some very cool pictures as always! The C5 is really a special sight, not sure if I have seen any pictures of it at all recently, so that is a nice surprise for sure. The CEWE livery is a great catch as well, as are the Etihad and the tail collection with the still very shiny A320NEO of LH. Very well done, thanks for sharing!
