A little more spotting | Munich (not the airport though), May 9, 2020

Hey again!

It’s not really been a long time since the last spotting topic (just a bit more than 24h to be precise), but I motivated myself for another trip today. This time, I didn’t visit Munich Airport though. Instead, I took my bike for a 2 hour ride to the southern edge of the city of Munich (roughly 30kms one way) with a 1 hour break in the woods next to the Harlaching Hospital which is the home base for “Christoph 1”, the oldest operating rescue helicopter base in Germany which was established 50 years ago in 1970. For that reason, D-HYAL, one of the Airbus H145 helicopters of ADAC Luftrettung, received a special livery showing of quite a few 50s on its fuselage. (The German speakers here can read more about the history as well as some numbers about the helicopters that are spread out throughout Germany here: https://luftrettung.adac.de/50-jahre-luftrettung/)

When I arrived at the station, the helicopter was sitting on its pad right in front of the hangar after one flight it had already performed that day.

While it admittedly is a bit weird to say it that way when talking about a rescue helicopter which only operates when a person somewhere is in trouble, I was quite lucky with my arrival time since it didn’t even take 15 minutes after my arrival until the helicopter departed for another mission south of Munich. Being there for the first time, it was a bit difficult to figure out how it would depart so I positioned myself in a not really favorable position for pics that aren’t backlit, but some shots still worked well. Might fix that during another visit to the station some day 😉

While checking FR24 regularly to see when to expect it back from its mission, I checked out the surroundings a bit to find a good spot to spot the landing. While the landing itself (of course) was in the shaddow, the shots of the approach turned out quite nicely:

Another bonus closeup to show the 50 years stickers even better:

It might not be the best quality since I took the video using my phone, I also recorded the landing to give you a little additional impression of the surroundings:

After waiting if it would depart for another mission for quite some time I decided to start the 1 hour ride back. Funnily, about halfway home the helicopter overtook me on its next mission. This time it was actually going to a rather remote place about 5-10 kilometers away from my home. While I could think that was bad luck, I would have never made it to that place in time to spot it there without the 60km ride 😉

I hope you liked this very short topic once again. Let’s see what the next few weeks will bring :)

That helicopter looks too good for me not to rate this thread a 10/10, so 4/10. :P

It’s clearly their own fault when they put a special livery on it 🤪 Did they really think I would not spot that?!

That’s a rather special topic. Not something you see that often (somewhat fortunately) from up close. Thanks for sharing!

I’ll have to see what I can come up with in the next weeks, I guess repeating the same aircraft again and again won’t be that entertaining 👀
