Terminal Information

Terminal 1

Opened in 1978, Terminal 1 operates under a satellite terminal design with 3 wings comprising of the North Wing, Central Building, and South Wing. Since 2007, the North Wing is home to SkyTeam members such as Aeroflot, Air France, KLM, Aeromexico, and Korean Air. Historically, Delta, Continental and Northwest also used the wing as well. Other airlines not in Skyteam but operate in the North Wing include Aircalin, Hawaiian Airlines, and Etihad. The South Wing operates for Star Alliance members which include ANA, and non-members such as Air Busan, MIAT, and Uzbekistan Airlines. Terminal 1 has a total of 40 gates.

Terminal 2

Opened in 1992, Terminal 2 operates under a similar satellite terminal design, and can handle widebodies such as the A380 and 747-8. The main operator in Terminal 2 is Japan Airlines and is also the main terminal of OneWorld Alliance since 2010. Airlines such as China Airlines, China Eastern, Air India, Fiji Airways, Air Macau, Air Niugini, Eastar Air, Emirates, Pakistan International Airlines, Philippine Airlines, and Scoot also operate in this terminal. Terminal 2 has a total of 32 gates.

Terminal 3

Terminal 3 is the terminal for low cost carriers which opened in April 2015. The terminal is designed to cut facility costs for airlines, with many cost cutting measures incorporated. Instead of gates, the terminal uses airstairs to board and deboard passengers. Jetstar Japan, Spring Japan and other budget airlines use Terminal 3. Terminal 3 has a total of 15 gates.

Now this is what I call a VERY Detailed guide!

Thanks!

Oh wow, never knew that.

Anyways, very nice thread!

Is there any difference between RJTT and RJAA? Before, I always thought both have their specific task, one for more international and one for more regional operations. Or is the only difference the airlines?

I would say mostly airlines. RJTT is directed for ANA while RJAA is used more by JAL.

I think you accidentally put the distances in meters not feet

I did my mistake lol. Fixed.

Thanks for that info! But another thing: Is there a reason like slot availability that made some Star Alliance members such as Austrian fly to Narita and not Haneda? I am always used to airlines of one alliance mostly flying to the same airport and even terminal as their partners. Or maybe that’s because within the LH Group there already is sufficient service to RJTT and they want to diversify their offerings?

I would say it’s cause Lufthansa flies to Haneda.

Wow, very thought out post, we totally need more japanese 3d airports, including RJAA

Narita has more cargo ops, and used to have higher demand, although a lot of airlines are changing routes to RJTT since RJTT is closer to the Tokyo, while RJAA is a bit farther, some airlines are even stopping operations to RJAA

Def agreed!

Can def confirm,

took me 6 hours (with heavy traffic) to get from Narita to Shinjuku in a taxi compared to the 30 minutesr from Haneda. Narita is more cargo centric like said though. There’s obviously wayyyy more domestic destinations from Haneda and this might be for business travelers on a schedule needing to get to their destination with punctuality compared to a leisure tourist. The governments purpose for Narita was to take some of the heavy traffic into Haneda.

Wow, what a list! It’s fascinating just scrolling down the list of carriers.

Haneda was how you flew into Tokyo until 1978 when Narita was opened. Pretty much all international arrivals were taken up by Narita for many years.

It wasn’t until 2010 that Haneda was upgraded with a new international terminal and a 4th runway. Long haul service to Haneda apparently only started again in 2014.

And this was news to me: “The Japanese government is currently encouraging the use of Haneda for premium business routes and the use of Narita for leisure routes and by low-cost carriers.” At first we remember only ANA started international operations from Haneda. Not any more apparently.

I’m kind of stunned at the re-emergence of Haneda, after all the years of Narita being “the airport:” List of the busiest airports in Japan - Wikipedia

BTW from Narita a normal taxi is extremely expensive compared to, say, a limousine bus and good network connection to google the efficient transit system.

While Narita is definitely “out in the country,” 6 hours would be very rare bad luck due to a major accident or something. Really bad traffic it’s hard to imagine more than a couple of hours.

Green rice fields during the growing season can make it somewhat pleasant (if access to a toilet!)…

Credit there goes to @Toukaneki . I won’t take all the credit for it. This was a team effort after all :).

I believe that might’ve been it, it was 2019 since the last visit,

Weather was another issue (It was monsoon season at the time), usually it takes a couple hours like you said on a regular day with no incidents. Train was another option which I wonder why I didn’t pick. If you don’t mind waiting, Narita is worth it, lot of more lounges to enjoy, etc.
