A Clear New Zealand Morning to a Cloudy day in the Windy City

AUCKLAND to CHICAGO

A few weeks ago I flew Auckland to Chicago, I was really surprised to see that this route was flown by Air New Zealand because I feel like this should be the longest route in the world, but it only takes about 13-14 hours. This route is flown by Air New Zealand as ANZ 26 and they use the 787-9 which I used as well. Flight time was 13 Hours 6 minutes

As always please let me know your thoughts and your favorite photo!

Why is Chicago known as the Windy City?

  • The Prevailing Winds off of Lake Michigan create different pockets of Air pressure causing strong winds
  • The airports of Chicago are so close to downtown that it is said that jet engines cause wind felt throughout the city
  • People were known to be “Full of hot air” and big headed in the 1920’s and they were called winders

Awesome shots, I think you got some nice tailwinds as it’s usually around 14 hours, but from ORD-AKL it’s nearly 16 hours due to headwinds.

Has anyone here read Devil In The White City? 👀

Fantastic colours!

This one is my favourite though (not sure why), looking absolutely great!

Once again a well made topic, and as you wrote that’s a pretty odd/special/interesting route to have both IRL and in IF.
Thanks for sharing!

Ah… Always so beautiful! Love that wing view climbing out of New Zealand, good colors. Actually for most of the pics you have some good definition and/or contrast!!

Not gonna lie I don’t like that this route exists. If you ask me for my opinion I say drop ORD and come to DEN.

Not gonna lie, I could see AKL-DEN co-existing with AKL-ORD in the future. American Airlines is beefing up New Zealand service this year and ANZ has so far responded with Newark.

DEN offers a good amount of connections but I’m not sure how many can already be accessed through ORD without backtracking.

AKL-ORD is promoted by some New Zealand American communities in the Illinois/Michigan area.
