4 Sector Day From Palma de Mallorca

4 Sector Day w/ easyJet

About The Event

As we approach the end of the summer, many will be wanting to be off for a last-minute summer getaway, a good few of whom will choose one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations: Mallorca.

This event will simulate a realistic full day as a pilot based in Palma de Mallorca with easyJet, utilising the planned ATC services from the IFATC schedule. This of course is a long event (just over 10 hours), so feel free to join for as many or for as few flights as you’d like!

We’ll be starting the day at around 11:00am local time to fly up to London Gatwick (where we should hopefully also see some ATC). Making a quick turn around, we’ll head back to Palma before getting on our way for another round trip to Geneva.

There are no gate assignments or sign-ups for this event.

Below you can find the details for each flight. You’ll notice that there is a column called “OFP Link”. I will add a Simbrief-generated LIDO Operational Flight Plan which you may choose to use if you so wish. You can of course make your own too! I’ll add routing information after the table if you’d prefer to just use that instead. OFPs and routing will be available at 0800Z on the day.

Palma de Mallorca Airport is an international airport located east of Palma, Mallorca, Spain, adjacent to the village of Can Pastilla. In 2020, the airport handled 6.1 million passengers (after 29.7 million in 2019, in pre-COVID-19 conditions), making it the third busiest airport in Spain, after Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-EI Prat. The airport is the main base for the Spanish carrier Air Europa and also a focus airport for Eurowings, EasyJet, Jet2.com, Ryanair and Vueling. The airport shares runways with the nearby Son Sant Joan Air Force Base, operated by the Spanish Air and Space Force.

Threats to be aware of:
• Terrain to the North of the field. MSA 7000ft to the North. MSA 3000ft to the South. Use caution. It’s recommended to strictly comply to departure/arrival procedure altitude constraints.
• Possibly busy airspace with IFATC. Always follow ATC instructions, including deviations from your flight plan. Expect delays.

Parking:
As far as I can tell, there is no specific area easyJet aircraft usually use. There is only one terminal so anywhere should be good. Anyone feel free to correct me on that.

London Gatwick (LGW/EGK)), UK 🇬🇧

London Gatwick also known as Gatwick Airport is a secondary international airport serving London, England, United Kingdom. It is located near Crawley, West Sussex, England, south of Central London. In 2022, Gatwick was the second-busiest airport by total passenger traffic in the UK, after Heathrow Airport, and was the 8th-busiest in Europe by total passenger traffic.
Gatwick opened as an aerodrome in the late 1920s; it has been in use for commercial flights since 1933. The airport has two terminals, the North Terminal and the South Terminal. It operates as a single-runway airport, using a main runway (08R/26L) with a length of 3,316 metres. A secondary runway (08L/26R) is available but, due to its proximity to the main runway, can only be used if the main runway is not in use. In 2018, 46.1 million passengers passed through the airport, a 1.1% increase compared with 2017.

Threats to be aware of:
• Possibly busy airspace with IFATC. Always follow ATC instructions, including deviations from your flight plan. Expect delays.
• NOTAM: RWY08L/26R is closed and may only be used as a taxiway. 08L/26R still has runway markings and lighting. Use caution to not mistake the two.

Parking:
easyJet use both the North and South Terminal at Gatwick. This flight on FlightAware tends to be going to the North Terminal by the looks of things, so I’ll be heading up that way. But both should be fine.

Geneva (GVA/LSGG) , Switzerland 🇨🇭

Geneva Airport, formerly and still unofficially known as Cointrin Airport, is the international airport of Geneva, the second most populous city in Switzerland. It is located NorthWest of the city centre. It surpassed the 15-million-passengers-a-year mark for the first time in December 2014. The airport serves as a hub for Swiss International Air Lines and easyJet Switzerland. It features a route network of flights mainly to European metropolitan and leisure destinations as well as some long-haul routes to North America, China, Africa, and the Middle East, amongst them Swiss International Air Lines’ only long-haul service (to New York-JFK) outside of Zürich.
The airport lies entirely within Swiss territory, however, its northern limit runs along the Swiss-French border and the airport can be accessed from both countries. The freight operations are also accessible from both countries, making Geneva a European Union freight hub although Switzerland is not a member of the EU. The airport is partially in the municipality of Meyrin and partially in the municipality of Le Grand-Saconnex.

Threats to be aware of:
• High terrain surrounding the airfield. MSA 10,600ft to the East/SouthEast. MSA 7,000ft to the North West. Use caution. It’s stringly recommended to strictly comply to departure/arrival procedure altitude constraints.
• More likely to be UNICOM. Pay extra attention to other air traffic in the vicinity.

Parking:

Geneva’s Terminal 2 is only seasonally used in the Winter for limited flights. So Terminal 1 would be a better location to park at. Budget airline so remote stands are ideal too.
