Confusingly named the Republic of the Congo, north of its neighbour, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which is split by the Congo River, lays awkwardly in the middle of Gabon, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has a shape that leads to the Atlantic Ocean. It came about after the its independence from their coloniser, Belgium. However, contrary to many instances where borders were drawn from conflicts, this border was drawn as a result of colonial influence, where the Democratic Republic of the Congo was a French colony.
