Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (VEGT/GAU)

The land of colours and the land of spices never fails to amaze me, and this time, we visit the state of Assam. A less well known part of India, the terrain around here isn’t perfectly flat which always poses a challenge to all controllers. I do recommend new officers come to this region though. Terrain shouldn’t be the most difficult, though keeping track of it can pose a challenge when traffic increases.

Velana International Airport (VRMM/MLE)

Visiting the lowest country in the world, averaging only 1.5 meters above sea level, this country formed from sunken volcanoes. It’s rich history as a stopping point for many historical traders also means that it is a cultural melting pot of gold, with influences from Asia, Europe and Africa on one small island.

Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (FLKK/LUN)

A large trend on the African continent is relying heavily on its natural resources for its source of income. Zambia relies heavily on the copper mining industry, and has felt the effects when the copper market collapsed in the 1970s. Nonetheless, the country has since started diversifying its economy to also include agriculture as a major industry in the country.

Zagreb Franjo Tuđman Airport (LDZA/ZAG)

Thought to be a difficult country for vegetarians and vegans due to its diet consisting heavily of meat and fish, Croatia is a little country with a big impact on the football stage. Finalists at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Moscow, Croatia has produced plenty of world class football players such as Luka Modrić, Ivan Rakitić and Mateo Kovačić.

King Mswati III International Airport (FDSK/SHO)

Eswatini, formerly officially known as Swaziland, is one of the last countries to have an absolute monarchy, where the royal family holds absolute power of the government in the country. Not only that, but Eswatini is home to the longest reigning monarch, where King Sobhuza II reigned for a record 82 years.

South Africa

Cape Town International Airport (FACT/CPT)

Having taken part in the South African Takeover, I was on frequency at Cape Town. A city with gorgeous views out to the ocean as well as the bonus that the airport had 3D buildings, the airport was a charm to work with. Not to mention the mountains that lay just to the east of the city.

Botswana is well known as being one of the four countries that meet at the Caprivi Strip in Namibia, but alongside that, Botswana itself is 40% national parks, so if you’re there for a wildlife trip, you’d be sure to find something that interests you. Not to mention, Botswana is a major diamond mining country, so if you’re looking for gems, Botswana has got you covered.

José Martí International Airport (MUHA/HAV)

Known to be one of the most colourful and architecturally unique country, with heritage from all over America and Europe, Cuba is the melting pot of colonial architecture. While it is predominantly Spanish influence, there are plenty of subtle hints of Greek and Roman traits as well. Not to mention the recent circumstances of the country has led to plenty of antiques to still play a big part of the country’s economy.

Hosea Kutako International Airport (FYWH/WDH)

Being a geographically diverse country, with desert, mountains, canyons, and savannas throughout the country, Namibia has been a welcomed destination for those looking for a true wildlife experience. To add to that, the Namib and Kalahari deserts are home to plenty of exotic and fragile flora and fauna which are absolutely out of this world.

Maputo International Airport (FQMA/MPM)

Having gorgeous tropical islands, Mozambique is a popular honeymoon destination. Not to mention, islands means coastlines, and over 2500KM of coastlines lines Mozambique. Being a well known tropical diving site, with marine life such as the rare Dugong and over 1,200 species to Mozambique, its safe to say that it’ll see more tourists come when restriction start to be relaxed.

Chișinău International Airport (LUKK/KIV)

Friday Night Flight this week brings us to Russia, featuring Moscow Domodedovo airport with 3D buildings. With traffic being high, I’ve opted to try and open a secondary hub, in Moldova. Oddly enough, a diplomatic dispute some 15 years ago led to Russia banning the imports of Moldavian wine, although this has not affected Moldova, being one of the top wine producing countries to this day.

Angola has always had Portuguese influence, for over 500 years, being a colony of the once ever conquering empire. Despite being the wealthiest Portuguese speaking country on the African continent, wars in the 21st century caused malnutrition and remnants of the war are still found with undetonated land mines. Nonetheless, being in the intertropical convergence zone, Angola sees weather from dry and hot to wet and cold throughout the year.

Saint Helena

Saint Helena Airport (FHSH/HLE)

Saint Helena as an island is not only remote, but holds significant part of history in being the place of Napoleon Bonaparte’s exile. This island was where Napoleon remained until his eventual death, which, of all causes, is thought to have been from arsenic poisoning from copper arsenite which could be found in the walls.

Chileka International Airport (FWCL/BLZ)

Malawi is one of the poorest countries on the African continent, and in the world too. However, it doesn’t stop it from being preserved naturally. With a lake with more species of fishes than any other in the world, as well as two UNESCO world heritage sites, Malawi is being preserved in more ways than one. It’ll be interesting to see how this progresses as it would take up a large part of the country, however, promoting its culture and boosting tourism looks to be a beneficial way for this to happen.

Grand Cayman

Owen Roberts International Airport (MWCR/GCM)

Grand Cayman is a popular diving island. With the ocean merely steps away from you, the island sees tens of thousands of tourists every year, barring this year and the last for obvious reasons. Even then, the rich population of turtles as well as numerous scenic dive sites makes it a highly popular place to visit. Not to mention that this is a British Overseas Territory, making Queen Elizabeth II the official head of state for this island.
