Madeira, Portgual
Madeira is often the name people use to decribe the town the airport sits in when in-fact its the name of the island. Officially the autonomous region of Portugual, it sits southwest of the Iberian Peninsula is one of two archipelagos in the Atlantic Ocean that Portugual has - the other being The Azores. It is one of the busiest and most popular European holiday destinations and is a very frequent stop for Atlantic passenger cruises to the Caribbean and North Africa. Source
The island has an incredibly rich but also at times tumultouos history that starts in the BC years during the time of Ancient Greece. European exploration began around the early 14th century and the first portuguese settlements began showing up in the first quarter of the 15th century. The wine and spirits trades of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries hold a lot of the history of region, as well as the world wars of the 1900s. Source
Funchal and Cristiano Ronaldo Airport
Funchal is the capital of the island and Portugual’s 6th largest city, located on the south central part of the island. Mirror to the islands’, the city as a very long history, especially with its architecture, cuisines and geography. The city is located in one of the Islands’ many natural amphitheatre valley’s which has caused many spots in the city to be built around the geography including the botanical gardens, and the Monte Palace tropical garden.
Funchal Airport - renamed to honor Footballer and Madeiran native Cristiano Ronaldo in 2017, is the main airport serving the Island and serves about 5.5 → 5.6 million passengers each year. The airport has long been consider the “Kai Tak” of Europe due to its single runway, constant high winds, and lack of ILS approaches due to the terrain. The airport is also one of the only to be built on stilts - a fact that came true in September 2000 when runway 23 was extended over the ocean to roughly 9,300 ft. The airport currently serves 29 airlines with service to Europe, Africa and North America on a mix of yearround and seasonal flights.
