Delta Virtual is proud to present our next community event, which takes us to the wonderful city of Boston, Massachusetts. General Edward Lawrence Logan International Airport or simply KBOS is a large Delta hub in the northeastern region of the United States, servicing plenty of short, medium and long haul routes.
A Bit About Boston
Located right off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean sits Boston, Massachusetts. It is the capital and most populous city in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, with a metro population of roughly 4.6 million people. This makes Boston the 21st most populous city in the United States.
Boston is widely known as the scene of several key events in American history. Including the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and the Siege of Boston. Once gaining independence from Great Britain, the city continued to play an important role in American history as a vital port and manufacturing hub as well as a center for culture and education.
Today, Boston is a hub of science, education, and business. In 2017, the city was ranked 5th in the world for innovation. The city is also considered a pioneer in entrepreneurship with roughly 5,000 startups in 2016. Harvard University and MIT are just a short drive away from the bustling streets of downtown Boston, making the city a world leader in higher education. Boston’s old nickname the “Athens of America” still rings true as Boston was ranked 8th in the world for the Best Student Cities in 2017. Clearly, there’s a lot of love in beautiful Boston!
Boston Logan International Airport is located in mostly East Boston and Winthrop, Massachusetts. Boston Logan, a major hub for Delta, has six runways, four passenger terminals, and roughly 16,000 employees. At 2,384 acres, it is the largest airport in the State of Massachusetts and is ranked 16th busiest airport in the US based on passenger volume and cargo handling. The airport saw 42,522,411 passengers in 2019 alone.
Logan International services non-stop destinations throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Latin America, South America, Africa, and Asia. Boston is also a major hub for Cape Air and an operating base for JetBlue. All major US air carriers offer flights from Boston to all or the majority of their primary or secondary hubs.
Boston Logan is currently in the stages of an expansion project to Terminal E, the John A. Volpe International Terminal. Beginning in 2019, the expansion will include 7 additional international gates, a new TSA checkpoint, and an expansion to the current ticketing, customs, and baggage claim areas. The project is set to be completed in early 2023 at the cost of $680 million. There is no doubt that Boston Logan has a very bright future!
