POI Description Keflavík Airport We’re leaving from KEF Airport, our home base. Heading east, this is the start of our Iceland ring tour! Reykjanes We’re taking off from the Reykjanes peninsula, where volcanic eruptions resumed in 2021 after 800 years of silence. Since then, several eruptions have occurred, reshaping the landscape. Vestmannaeyjar Flying over the volcanic Westman Islands, including Surtsey, born in 1963, and Heimaey, where the 1973 eruption of Eldfell reshaped the island and its town. South Coast Let’s continue over the famous — and overtouristed — South Coast of Iceland. Expect to see glaciers, black sand beaches, countless waterfalls and winding rivers. Vatnajökull That giant white surface? It’s Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe. Covering over 7,900 km², it’s melting fast — losing about 1 meter in thickness per year. Seyðisfjörður / East Iceland Seyðisfjörður is a charming fjord town and the ferry gateway from Denmark and the Faroe Islands. The Eastfjords are wild, remote, and stunning. Akureyri Known as the “Capital of the North”, Akureyri is Iceland’s second-largest city. A cultural hub with fjord views, a botanical garden, and vibrant cafés. Hornstrandir Welcome to the wildest part of Iceland — the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. Only accessible by foot or boat, it’s a paradise for hikers and Arctic foxes. Ísafjörður One of Iceland’s oldest settlements and the heart of the Westfjords. Known for its dramatic scenery and the challenging approach to its tiny airport! Snæfellsnes Instead of taking the ferry from the Westfjords, we fly over the magical Snæfellsnes Peninsula — often called “Iceland in Miniature” with its volcano, cliffs, orcas, and whale sightings. Reykjavík We’ll make a low pass over Reykjavík — the world’s northernmost capital. Look out for Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa, and the colorful rooftops! Back in KEF! Finally back to Keflavík after a full ring around Iceland. What a journey!
There’s so much more to discover — the wild Highlands, hidden northern gems, and quiet towns that are worth every detour.
